I went in to watch this Star Trek not knowing what to expect but having a great amount of respect for director J.J. Abrams, I was hoping for the best. He does not dissapoint which is confirmed by the current IMDB rating of 8.5/10 from over 50,000 votes. I have always been a fan of the original series with Captain Kirk and his crew, never really got into the "Star Trek The Next Generation", "Star Trek Enterprise" or "Star Trek Voyager" to name a few. None of them ever came close to THE captain Kirk, Spock, Sulu, Scotty amongst others and how can we ever forget the original USS Enterprise.
What the movie does really well in my opinion is that it maintains a fast pace throughout and keeps you glued to the screen. I was struggling to take a bathroom break, telling myself "just hang on for another minute, I'll miss something important" :-) There are bits and parts which give a "Lost" feel which I am sure a lot of Lost fans would have noticed. Of course, I do not think there is anything wrong with that, in fact those are the parts that generate emotions for the characters. The movie happily does have a lot of heart which lacks in big movies very often.
Good entertainment value you may ask? Absolutely. The movie keeps you thoroughly entertained throughout and does not strech at any point. Some of the casting is excellent, Eric Bana who plays the role of the ruthless Captain Nero is brilliant. Zachary Quinto as Spock had big shoes to fill (Leonard Nimoy) but does it ever so well, the choice of Chris Pine as Kirk was a bit of worry for me but he pulls it off well. The film uses good humour with witty dialogues to lighten the mood and that works really well.
Since entertainment is what most of us want from any movie, I would highly recommend it (especially to any fans of the original Star Trek Series). Four and a half stars out of five, actually lets make it 5/5 stars from me. Movies like this don't come by very often these days.
