It takes quite a movie to make Brendan Fraser look like a good actor. But this tangled tale of love and war--based on, and truthful to, Graham Greene's book--surprisingly and Quiet-ly does. Michael Caine goes for the gold (Oscar, that is) in his best role in ages, maybe even his career, as a veteran London Times journalist in heated 1952 Saigon who's involved with teen mistress Do Thi Hai Yen. But when Fraser's soft-spoken and suspicious medical-aid officer arrives and develops a yen for Yen, a war of emotions erupts. The guys keep it stoic and tight, while director Phillip Noyce's correlation between the war over the woman and the struggle outside is executed perfectly. No conflict here--you've gotta see this movie.
