Actress Gabrielle Union survived a brutal rape when she was 19 when a summer job turned into a nightmare. The Bring It On star, now 29, was trying to earn extra cash by working a late shift in a shoe store in Pleasanton, California, when a gun-wielding maniac attacked her and a friend, forced them to strip in a backroom and then had sex with her. Union admits she got through the terrible ordeal by spiritually leaving her body. She says, "As he was raping me, I felt as though I was floating over myself, thinking, 'This isn't happening, ' and 'I'm perfect, I'm a good person, I'm a good student.'" Union explains in the new issue of fashion magazine Teen Vogue that she reached for the thug's gun at one point - after he'd raped her - but was too shaken up by the experience to kill her attacker. She adds, "I popped the clip back in and fired. I missed him, and he started to hit me. He was almost twice my size, but it was a pretty fair fight for a while because I knew it was either him or me. I kept trying to shoot him, but the trigger was jammed. It felt like a war. Finally, he grabbed for the gun at the same second he punched me in the face, and I let go. But, instead of killing me, he asked me how to get out, and he left."
