Pooja Batra is the latest addition to the list of film stars who have turned to stage because they find it ‘challenging’.
She makes her debut with Ek Se Bhale Do. This is the Hindi version of the English play, I Love You Two, which featured actress Sheeba.
The play opens on May 18 at the Rangsharda auditorium, Bandra, followed by shows in Dubai and the USA.
Written by Dinyar Contractor, Ek Se Bhale Do revolves around Mona (played by Batra), a divorcee, who carries on an affair with two men.
Each man is devoted three days in a week with Sundays for herself.
Complications arise when one of them overstays in her house and it is the turn of the next guy to arrive.
The play has been adapted and directed by Paritosh Painter and produced by Kamlesh Bhuptani Chaku of Classic Productions and Asha of Sai Drishti Entertainment.
Those familiar with the duo of Contractor-Painter and their plays (I Do I Don’t, Whose Wife Is It Anyway, I Love You Two) would know what to expect: a fast-paced, boisterous comedy replete with double innuendos.
Batra, who recently tied the knot with USA-based doctor Sonu Ahluwalia, says that though she had been approached for this play a while ago, she finally agreed “as the timing was perfect.” Batra is also shooting for Akbar Khan’s Taj Mahal — An Eternal Love Story. “I found the script amazingly funny.
Theatre is something I always wanted to do. Earlier, due to film commitments I did not have the time.
Now I have set aside time for it,” she says as she prepares to memorise the lines and begin rehearsals.
Her co-stars in the play include TV actors Rohit Roy, Resham Tipnis Seth, Harish Patel, Balvinder Singh Sandhu and Madhvi Patel.
“They all have done theatre previously and will be there to provide cues if I forget my lines. I don’t have stage fright as I have done several ramp shows,” she adds.
The reason why the producers selected Batra was “because internationally there is a big market for Hindi plays.
Indians abroad want to see familiar faces. That’s the reason why we rope in film and TV stars,” says Bhuptani.
