Oscar winners will have to complete their acceptance speeches in a mere 45 seconds - or be drowned out by the house band.

The producers of the Academy Awards are so adamant that the sprawling show will not exceed four hours, they have told stars, including Nicolas Cage, Nicole Kidman, and Renee Zellweger, they can thank a maximum of five people.

Producer Gil Cates says, "If you pull out a piece of paper and start to read a list of names, you are done. The orchestra will begin to play and you leave the stage.

"I know that these are harsh measures but they are necessary. Sometimes even you here don't care about the names that other winners mention."
