Amanda Bynes is a typical teenager, even when she dresses up in "What a Girl Wants."
"She'd be all like dirt at the bottom of her beautiful white gown," Kelly Preston told reporters. "I was like, 'Amanda!' 'Oh yeah, I was just truckin' outside.' Her bottom was just brown to her dress. It was hilarious."
In the film, Bynes plays Daphne Reynolds, who grew up in New York City with her bohemian mother, Libby (Preston).
At one of the many weddings where Daphne works as a waitress while Libby sings with her rock band, Daphne laments that she'll never have the father-daughter dance the bride enjoys because she doesn't know her father.
Dad is Lord Henry Dashwood (Colin Firth), a British politician from an aristocratic family with whom Libby fell in love and informally married in Morocco 17 years ago. But Henry's family gave her the boot because she was an unsuitable Yank, and he never learned he had a daughter.
That leads Daphne to jet off to England.
As for flying, Preston would love to be a pilot, but she'll leave aviation to her actor-husband John Travolta.
"With the kids and trying to work and do all of it?" Preston asked. "I try to find as much time for my kids as possible. And learning how to fly would just take me away from them. So, I'd love to be a pilot. I've jumped out of planes before. I've parachuted, that's really fun. I think I'll let my expert husband be the pilot."
Preston said it was fun singing in the movie, even though she hoped she'd get to do some more takes.
"I am primarily a shower singer," she said. "Then a few karaoke nights with my girlfriends. And it was really fun. It was a challenge because I thought oh, we'll be able to redo it when you go back to L.A. I never did that," she said with a laugh.
As for her family, Preston said 3-year-old Ella is already showing talent as an actress.
"She's already performing," Preston said. "She's already pretending and putting on shows and outfits. And she did an English accent the other day. 'Dahling! Yes!' and this whole thing. Where is she getting (this)? I have no idea where she gets this."
