When we set up the REPline asking callers to vote for either Ruben Studdard or Clay Aiken as the newest American Idol, we had no idea we would max out our automated system: 1,000 calls per line.
But max out we did — before noon Tuesday. We have never had a voter turnout like this one.
What’s that mean? Well, Studdard and Aiken each had at least 1,000 callers before noon who thought their man was deserving of the title. Unfortunately, an untold number of calls were shut out before we were able to clear the lines and begin counting anew.
So we were left to count from noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday: a total of 451 calls.
And the winner was ...
Clay Aiken with 325 of the late votes, compared with Ruben Studdard’s 126. Remember, this was on top of the 1,000 calls each got earlier.Who knows, maybe Aiken’s supporters are procrastinators.
Both Aiken and Studdard had their passionate devotees with their fingers on the redial button.
One woman called at least 20 times with a single mantra:
“Ruben Studdard, No. 1.”
A girl left at least a half-dozen messages, most of which included, “I love you, Ruben.” (She also was calling for her mother and a friend.)
The comments left by many others indicate the passion for Ruben (most callers were on a first-name-only basis with him) went well beyond the number of calls.
• “I think Ruben is big, strong and ... singing his way into America’s heart.”
• “He’s the best thing I’ve heard in a long time.”
• “The man is grand.”
• “Go big Rube.”
• “Ruben, baby, I love you and I know my mother does.”
• “Ruben’s ... got what it takes to make it.”
• “He’s America’s teddy bear.”
But Aiken’s had his passionate devotees, too.
• “I’ve got 27 votes here for Clay Aiken.”
• “He’s a down-home guy.”
• “He’s an all-around good kid.”
• “I just love those dreamy eyes.”
• “He just looks like an entertainer, and his voice is beautiful.”
• “Clay’s voice could break my heart when he sings a love song.”
• “They are both priceless, but I hope Clay ... wins. What a fabulous singer.”
• “The range of Clay’s voice should allow him to win this.”
Thanks to all of you who phoned in and our apologies for the REPline mishap. We’ll know better next time.
May the best man win tonight!
