American Idol's red-hot favorite Fantasia Barrino became the third winner of the TV talent contest Wednesday night, after beating teenager Diana DeGarmo by just one per cent of the vote. Over 65 million fans phoned in to vote on the outcome - and just over half of them decided the single mother from North Carolina should be the new American Idol. Barrino will taste chart success next week - her version of former Idol contestant Tamyra Gray's song "I Believe" is released in America. A sobbing Barrino performed the song at the close of Tuesday night's two-hour finale. After learning she was this year's winner, Barrino said, "I've been through some things but I worked hard to get to where I'm at. Thank y'all so much, man." Runner-up, DeGarmo, from Georgia, missed her high school prom to compete in the final. The show's normally tough British judge Simon Cowell was delighted about the result: "I put my faith in America and they didn't let me down. Fantasia is the best singer we've ever had in any of the Idol competitions." The finale also featured performances by former American Idol winners Kelly Clarkson and Ruben Studdard, as well as this year's 12 finalists.
