Teen wildchild Avril Lavigne is at the center of a row with bosses at MTV - after she stuck her middle finger up live on air. The Complicated singer, 19, was appearing on Total Request Live when interviewer Damien Fahey asked her what she thought of the media - prompting Lavigne to make the rude gesture. Producers, cautious after Janet Jackson's nipple-baring incident at this year's Super Bowl half-time show, immediately pulled the plug on Avril's performance. Later a MTV spokesperson slammed the Canadian pop star, saying, "It's totally inappropriate to make that gesture on the air. It's a little disrespectful to the audience." Lavigne's spokeswoman retorts, "It wasn't a gesture of defiance. She was laughing."
