FLAMING-SKULLED comic-book hero Ghost Rider took off with a box office bounty at the weekend.
Starring Nicolas Cage as a motorbike-riding vigilante, the film was shot in Melbourne in the first half of 2005. Telstra Dome, Melbourne General Cemetery and Southbank feature prominently in the action.
In the US, Ghost Rider made $US44.5 million after opening in 3619 theatres.
The figure is a new record for the President's Day public holiday weekend, and more than doubled the take of the second-placed film, Disney children's fantasy Bridge to Terabithia.
In Australia, Ghost Rider took $2.5 million on its first weekend.
The result is not as strong as first-weekend takes for big-budget releases including Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($11.2 million).
